Through our Ali Asghar Water Appeal, we work to provide access to clean and safe water to water-scarce communities around the world.
Nur Shams camp is located in the northern part of the West Bank of Palestine and has a population of around 10,500 registered refugees. There are two schools within the camp, one for boys and one for girls, with a total of 1,528 students and 60 staff. An assessment carried out in 2020 showed the critical condition of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in the schools. Disease spreads quickly in cramped spaces with limited ventilation, where hand-washing facilities or soap are not always available, and where toilets are in poor condition.
It is necessary to ensure availability of safe water and adequate, accessible handwashing stations, as well as to make sure that school toilets are well maintained and meet key hygiene and protection standards. This also raises important health risks related to the COVID-19 outbreak and needs to be addressed urgently.
Thanks to your generous donations in 2020, we were able to contribute to the refurbishment and repair of these WASH facilities. Over the course of six weeks, the following work was completed:
- Repair and re-installation of the internal existing toilets
- Replacing floor and wall tiles
- Installing new toilet fittings
- Internal and external Painting works
- Electrical and mechanical works
- Repair of all doors and windows
- Roof insulation
- Repair of water fountains
