A key objective in our Ali Asghar Water Appeal is providing long-term sustainable water sources that are safe for our beneficiaries.
Kenya is among the poorest countries of the world, and with a population of 57 million, 37% of Kenyans still relying on unsafe water sources, such as ponds, shallow wells, and rivers. In addition, 70% of Kenyans use unhygienic sanitation solutions.
Tana River County is located in the coastal area of Kenya with an estimated population of 315,000 people suffering from low literacy rates, and high unemployment and poverty rates.
Last year, your donations helped construct 16 wells within the Tana River county, supplying 840 residents with clean drinking water. To prevent and combat the spread and effects of water-borne disease, the initiative also involved providing 7,000 beneficiaries with water purification solutions. Oral Rehydration Salts were also distributed to urgently treat cases of dehydration due to diarrhea and cholera, thus preventing fatalities.
The beneficiaries were given educational tutorials on how to administer the chemicals safely and the water wells were assigned a custodian from the community for the purpose of responsibility, maintenance, and cleanliness.
Your donations ensured:
- Increased access to safe and adequate water and sanitation resulting in a reduction of water-borne diseases.
- Water availability for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and domestic use by households.
- Women have more time to undertake other socio-economic activities.
- Increased household income as a result of using water for income-generating activities such as farming.
- Afforestation and environmental conservation to decreased droughts.
Your donations are invaluable in providing life-changing aid to impoverished communities, as simply providing access to water in the Tana River county resulted in freeing children from having to fetch water from long distances and increased school attendance.
